Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company - Defy convention Education & Outreach

Community Playbuilding

In June 2006, Woolly presented the second in its unique series of community-based plays, The Other River: Ripples & Vibes from DC's Southside. This project focused on Southeast D.C. — "Southside" to the residents — which features neighborhoods as rich and historically diverse as any in the city. From Capitol Hill to historic Anacostia, from Berry Farm to Eastern Market and beyond, Woolly is proud to have brought the stories of these communities to the stage with a talented and enthusiastic cast of residents and professionals. Emerging after almost three years of workshops, interviews, archival research and story-gathering, much of it conducted by longtime residents of Southside DC, The Other River brought to vibrant life the stories, history and people of the neighborhoods on both sides of the Anacostia — “the other river.”

About Community Playbuilding

Woolly Mammoth’s award-winning Education & Outreach program is developing a series of four community-based plays, set in different quadrants of the city, that tell the distinct and diverse stories emerging from Washington’s neighborhoods. Participants conduct research and interviews, attend workshops, write and perform alongside local professionals. The first community play, Invisible City: 14th Street, Where Washington Meets DC, presented in 2001 by a cast of six professional and 26 community actors, focused on the changing ethnic and cultural identity of Woolly’s old neighborhood.
